How do I do the money jobs I keep putting off?

By hand, one at a time, starting from your own statements. Each job gets its own page, and a page is added only once we have done that job for real, so the list is short for now.

Cancelling a contract, switching electricity, finding out what the money actually went on: each is a job with a right way to do it, and the page you find first is usually the one designed to keep you paying. These are written out properly, and they hold whether or not you ever use any software to do them.

→ How do I find all my subscriptions? Export a full year from every account and card you pay from, then group the payments by payee and keep the ones that appear in three or more months. Then read each group by date, because one name often hides several charges.
→ How do I cancel Amazon Prime? Sign in to the Amazon site you joined Prime on, open the Prime membership page and choose to end it. Then reload that page and check it says the membership is ending rather than renewing.
→ What is APPLE.COM/BILL on my bank statement? It is Apple charging for something bought with an Apple Account, and one label can cover several subscriptions and one-off purchases at once. Apple's own subscription list and purchase history say which is which.
→ Rocket Money or Mind My Money? Only if you live in the United States and bank there, because Rocket Money supports only US users with US banks. There its team cancels subscriptions for you and negotiates some bills for a share of the first year's savings.
→ Monarch or Mind My Money? It is if you bank in the United States or Canada, the two countries Monarch says it supports. There it sorts your spending automatically and itemises receipts and Amazon US orders, but cancelling subscriptions is not something it offers.
→ YNAB or Mind My Money? It is if you want to give every dollar a job before you spend it, which is YNAB's method. It imports from banks in 18 European countries including Finland and Sweden, but it cancels nothing for you.
→ Copilot Money or Mind My Money? Only if you bank in the United States, because Copilot Money supports only US banks and dollars. There it sorts your spending automatically and itemises Amazon orders, and it points out subscriptions without cancelling them.
→ Emma or Mind My Money? It is if you bank in the UK, the US or Canada, the countries Emma says it is live in. It finds recurring payments on its paid plans, but by its own help centre it cannot cancel them for you.
→ Snoop or Mind My Money? It is if you bank in the UK, where Snoop supports all the large banks and is free to use. It suggests subscriptions to stop and deals to switch to, and a supplier you switch to may pay Snoop.
→ What replaced Mint? Intuit closed Mint and points its users to Credit Karma, which says it does not do budgeting the way Mint did. The apps that call themselves Mint's replacement mostly work only with North American banks.
→ Can I get compensation for a delayed flight? Yes, if EU or UK rules cover the flight and you arrived three or more hours late, unless the airline shows extraordinary circumstances. You claim from the airline directly and do not need a claims company.
→ How do I switch energy supplier? Choose the new tariff and give the new supplier your postcode, current tariff and yearly usage from your bill, and it does the rest within five working days. On a fixed deal the last 49 days carry no exit fee.
→ How do I cancel an Apple subscription? On an iPhone open Settings and tap your name and then Subscriptions. Pick the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription, and if a red expiry message shows instead it is already cancelled.
→ How do I cancel Netflix? In your Netflix account go to Manage your membership and choose Cancel and then Finish Cancellation. If there is no Cancel option another company bills you for Netflix and you cancel with them.
→ How do I cancel Planet Fitness? Send a letter to your home club or go there in person, or use the online member portal where your club allows it. Notice by the 10th stops that month's charge on the 17th.
→ How do I cancel Xfinity? Call Xfinity on 1-800-934-6489 or schedule a call or visit a store, because there is no online cancel. Return the equipment through xfinity.com/returns and keep the label stub as your receipt.
→ How do I cancel Sky? Give Sky 31 days' notice for TV and 14 for broadband. If you are switching broadband to another provider the new one cancels Sky for you, and leaving inside a minimum term costs an early termination charge.
→ How do I cancel Virgin Media? Chat online or call 150 from a Virgin Media phone and give 30 days' notice. If you are switching to another provider the new one cancels for you with no notice period.
→ How do I cancel BT Broadband? Call BT on 0800 783 1401 and give 30 days' notice, or start with your new provider and it handles the switch. Inside a minimum term BT charges every remaining month plus VAT.
→ Is it safe to give a money app your bank login? No, and you do not have to. A cloud service has to store the password and use it while you are not there; software on your own computer can drive a browser you are already signed into.
