How do I cancel Sky?

Give Sky 31 days' notice for TV and 14 for broadband. If you are switching broadband to another provider the new one cancels Sky for you, and leaving inside a minimum term costs an early termination charge.

Mind My Money works through leaving Sky with you and reads your Sky account afterwards to see that it has ended.

This is for anyone leaving Sky. The notice periods and the charges are on Sky's own help pages and are here in short. What those pages leave out is what happens to your sky.com email address, which is the one part of leaving that can cost you something you cannot buy back. Everything here is from Sky's own help articles, read between 19 and 22 September 2026.

What happens to your sky.com email address

Sky's help centre has no article on what happens to a Sky email address when you stop being a customer, so anybody telling you confidently is reading a forum post. What Sky does document is when an address disappears, and it is worth knowing before you leave.

Accounts “that haven't been used in 12 months or more will be deleted”, and the deletion takes everything with it: “you won't be able to access the account or any emails in it, including attachments, once it's closed. All data in the account will be deleted.” To stay active you have to sign in, and Sky's advice is “at least once every six months”.

Sky's article adds that the deletion “can include accounts with redirects to another service, as auto-forwarding makes your account appear inactive.” Forwarding the old address to your new one is exactly what a careful person does when they leave, and it is what makes the mailbox look abandoned. If anything still uses that address for password resets, either sign in twice a year or move those accounts over before the twelve months are up.

The notice, and who gives it

If you are moving broadband and landline to another provider, you normally do not contact Sky at all: the new provider tells Sky, and the Sky service ends when the new one starts. That covers broadband and phone only, so Sky TV and Sky Mobile carry on until you cancel them yourself.

Otherwise Sky TV needs 31 days' notice and Sky Broadband 14, and the notice cannot end before your minimum term does. Sky Stream is the exception, a rolling 31-day contract with no cancellation charge.

Sky asks you not to cancel the Direct Debit while you leave, “as further payment may still be due”, and it is sound advice rather than a sales tactic: stopping a payment does not end the agreement, and the payment you stop is still owed.

What leaving early costs

Inside a minimum term Sky charges an early termination charge, paid upfront, worked out from the days left and your monthly price less what Sky saves by not serving you. Sky does not publish the whole formula, so the only figure worth quoting is its own example: broadband and line rental at £38 a month with three months left comes to £68.

Outside the minimum term there is no charge at all, so your contract end date is the first thing to look up, because a few weeks' wait can make the charge disappear. New customers also have 31 days to change their mind, longer than the 14 the law requires.

After it ends

Sky takes payment a month in advance, so “you might still be billed for the full month ahead after your service has been cancelled.” Any credit left on the account goes back to your bank account after 45 days. Return the equipment using the returns method Sky gives you.

Where Mind My Money comes into it

Mind My Money goes through your spending on your own computer, so it sees what you pay Sky and when. Where you decide to leave, it works through it with you, then reads your Sky account to see that the service has ended, and counts the saving only once it has.
