Give 30 days' notice by chat, phone or letter, or let a new provider cancel it for you through One Touch Switch. Inside the minimum term the fee is most of what staying would have cost.
Mind My Money works through leaving Virgin Media with you and reads your account afterwards to see that it has ended.
This is for anyone leaving Virgin Media broadband, TV or phone, and especially for anyone trying to leave before the contract ends. Virgin Media's terms and help pages, and Ofcom's rules, were read on 30 September 2026.
Most people asking how to leave without paying are inside a minimum term, and for them there are a handful of routes that cost nothing, each with a deadline that is easy to miss. This table has all of them, from Virgin Media's own terms and Ofcom's rules. Your minimum term and its end date are on your Contract Summary, and that date is the one that matters, not the date a discount ends.
| Your situation | Fee | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| You signed up, renewed or added a TV package in the last 14 days | No fee | Cancel within 14 days of the latest of: the kit arriving, the service starting, or receiving the terms. |
| Your minimum term has ended | No fee | Give 30 days' notice, or switch through One Touch Switch and pay nothing after the switch date. |
| Virgin told you about a price rise or a change to your terms that is not in your favour | No fee | Cancel within 30 days of Virgin's notice of the change (terms, paragraph N6). |
| The April rise of a fixed £3.50 or £4, or RPI plus 3.9% on contracts from before 9 January 2025 | The fee applies | It was written into your contract, so it gives no right to leave. |
| A price rise that was not made clear when you signed | No fee | Ofcom says you have the right to leave without penalty; complain and say so. |
| Your speed is below the minimum guaranteed speed in your contract | No fee, including a linked bundle | Report it. Virgin has 30 days to fix it, and if it cannot, you cancel within 30 days of being told you may (N12). |
| You are moving within the UK to an address Virgin does not reach | Charged, then credited back | Say so when you cancel, and send proof of the new address within 30 days of Virgin asking for it. |
| You are moving to a Virgin address where it cannot give you the same service | No fee | Cancel, and tell Virgin why. |
| Anything else inside the minimum term | 78 to 99% of your monthly charge, per month left | Work out below whether leaving is worth it. |
Two things are left out on purpose. Virgin's bereavement page gives a form for closing an account but does not say whether the fee is waived, and its answer on moving abroad did not load, so neither is stated here.
Inside the minimum term, Virgin Media charges an early disconnection fee for every month left after your 30 days' notice. Its own estimate sheet puts that fee at a percentage of your current monthly charge, which means leaving early saves you only a small part of what staying would cost.
| Your services | Standard price | On an offer price |
|---|---|---|
| Broadband only | 93–96% | 90–95% |
| Broadband and home phone | 94–96% | 93–95% |
| Broadband and TV | 85–89% | not listed |
| Broadband, TV and home phone | 85–95% | 78–92% |
| Home phone only | 97–99% | not listed |
Virgin's own worked example is a bundle at £79 a month with four months left. You pay the notice month in full and then the fee for the other three, which Virgin puts at £280.45 to £304.15 in all. Staying would have cost 4 × £79, which is £316, so leaving saves between £11.85 and £35.55. Worked through the same way, every example on Virgin's sheet saves between 3 and 17 per cent of what staying would cost.
One of those examples does not add up. For broadband alone at an offer price of £44.50 a month, Virgin's worksheet gives the notice month as £44.50 and the fee for the other three months as £120.15 to £126.83, and then prints the totals as £182.15 to £188.83. The two parts add up to £164.65 to £171.33. As printed, leaving would cost more than the £178 of staying; added correctly, it saves £6.67 to £13.35. If you are quoted a fee, add it up yourself.
So the useful question is rarely how to avoid the fee. It is whether the new deal, plus any money the new provider offers towards exit fees (Ofcom says some do), comes out cheaper than the rest of this contract. The percentage also applies to your current monthly charge, so when a discount ends before the contract does, the fee goes up with the bill.
This is where most of the disputes on Virgin Media's forums start, and it is worked out here from Virgin's terms rather than stated by Virgin. Leaving by phone, chat or letter, the notice runs for 30 days, and any part of the minimum term still left after those 30 days is charged at the fee. So the day that costs nothing is 30 days before your minimum term ends. Give notice earlier and you pay the fee for the gap; give it later and the extra days are billed at the higher out-of-contract price.
With One Touch Switch there is no notice period. Ofcom's rule is that your old provider must not charge you for any notice after the switch date, so the day that costs nothing is a switch date on or just after the end of your minimum term.
On 8 July 2026 Ofcom fined Virgin Media £28 million for how it treated people trying to leave between January 2022 and September 2024. Ofcom found that only a second tier of its retention team could process a cancellation, so over a million callers had to repeat their request, and it described deliberate call-dropping, unnecessary transfers and long holds. Some customers gave up and cancelled the direct debit instead, which Ofcom says led to missed payments on their credit files, so that is the one way out not to take.
There are two ways round the call. One Touch Switch: order broadband from the new provider, and it cancels Virgin Media for you; Ofcom's rules say the old service stops once the new one works and any loss of service should not last longer than one working day. If you also have Virgin TV or a mobile, those may still need cancelling yourself. A letter: Virgin's terms list writing to Virgin Media, Sunderland, SR43 4AA as a way to give notice, alongside 0345 454 1111 (150 from a Virgin phone) and online chat.
If you do take the call and are offered a better price, remember that agreeing to it is a new contract. Before you say yes, ask for the Contract Summary and check the new minimum term, because it usually starts again from that day.
The closing bill covers your service up to the end of the notice period (or the switch date) and any fee. Check it against the table above, and keep every chat transcript, letter and switch confirmation until it is settled.
The equipment. Virgin sends a returns pack, and you drop the box at a Yodel by InPost store and keep the receipt. If you are charged anyway, the tracking number on that receipt is what gets the charge cancelled. Virgin's terms say you get a refund if the kit is back within 80 days of the service ending, while its price guide says 120, so aim for 80. The price guide's charges for kit that is not returned go up to £75 for a Hub 5 and £100 for a TV 360 box, and they arrive after the account is closed, when nobody is watching the bills any more.
Your email address. Virgin Media is handing its email service to a company called Junara, and an address ending @virginmedia.com, @blueyonder.co.uk, @virgin.net or @ntlworld.com can only be kept by signing up with Junara and paying for it, at a price neither company publishes. Move anything you want to keep, and change the address on accounts that send codes to it, before you leave.
If it goes wrong. Complain to Virgin Media in writing. Once six weeks have passed, or you have a deadlock letter, you can take it free of charge to one of the two ombudsman schemes, CISAS or the Communications Ombudsman. Virgin's own complaints code still says eight weeks; Ofcom cut it to six from 8 April 2026.
Mind My Money goes through your spending on your own computer, so it sees what you pay Virgin Media each month. Where you decide to leave, it works through it with you, then reads your Virgin Media account to see that the service has ended, and counts the saving only once it has.
