Call BT on 0800 783 1401 and give 30 days' notice, or start with your new provider and it handles the switch. Inside a minimum term BT charges every remaining month plus VAT.
Mind My Money works through leaving BT with you and checks the final bill and the payments stopping.
This is for anyone leaving BT Broadband. The call itself is quick, and what costs money is the timing and the equipment. Everything is from BT's own help pages as they read on 19 September 2026.
It is on the home page of My BT online or in the My BT app. BT's minimum terms are usually 12, 18 or 24 months, and leaving inside one costs “the remaining amount you would have paid up to the end of your minimum period.” BT spells out the sum: “We take your monthly price, multiply it by the number of months left on each service contract, and add VAT.” Unlike some providers, BT describes no discount on that.
So with a few months left, the whole of those months is what you would pay, and waiting for the end date may be the cheapest way out.
If you are moving to a new provider, you start with them, and in BT's words “they will be responsible for handling your switch.” The notice period when you switch this way is 14 days rather than 30.
Call BT on 0800 783 1401 (Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm, Saturday 8am to 8pm, Sunday 9am to 6pm). There is no online cancellation. BT's leaving page shows your personalised offers before it gives the number, and you do not have to take one.
You need to give 30 days' notice, and the service stops 30 days after you cancel. If you want it to stop sooner, BT charges for the remaining days of the 30.
BT emails you a QR code and a printable label, and you take the equipment to a Royal Mail Customer Service Point, a Post Office or a Royal Mail parcel locker. BT's own stores only take mobile phones back.
You have 60 days from the date you stopped using it. After that BT charges for anything not returned, from £50 for a Complete Wi-Fi disc to £65 for a Smart Hub, £85 for a Smart Hub 3 and £140 for a TV Box Pro. Keep the Royal Mail receipt with its tracking barcode until the return shows on your account.
BT's examples show the final bill arriving within 10 days of the stop date. Check it for the notice period, any early termination charge and any equipment charge, and check your bank statement afterwards that the monthly payment has stopped.
Mind My Money goes through your spending on your own computer, so it sees what you pay BT. Where you decide to leave, it works through it with you, and checks your statements afterwards for the final bill and that the payments stopped.
Runs on your own computer. Pay what you decide, including nothing.
